An Acceleration of COVID-19 in Africa
An Acceleration of COVID-19 in Africa
There is overwhelming evidence in many advanced countries to suggest that coronavirus is having a disproportionate impact on people from ethnic minority backgrounds. The main remain reason centers on the impact of “social determinants of health” on people of color irrespective of where they are in the world. The burden is most prevalent in Africa continent, where health infrastructure is operating at its bearest capacity. An influx of professionals to the western world has left the continent with near to nothing expertise on the ground to cater to the mass economically disadvantaged population in Africa.
For instance, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where COVID-19 cases were at first confined to Kinshasa, now a handful of cases have been reported in the easternmost regions of the country that were until recently in the grip of an Ebola outbreak. In South Africa, all provinces have now reported cases. The outbreaks in Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Senegal are also widespread.
“Case numbers are increasing exponentially in the African region,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa. “It took 16 days from the first confirmed case in the Region to reach 100 cases. It took a further 10 days to reach the first thousand. Three days after this, there were 2000 cases, and two days later we were at 3000.”
The World Health Organization is now sounding the alarm of what the impact of COVID-19 will be for our people in Africa. In Africa, the virus has spread to dozens of countries within weeks. Governments and health authorities across the continent are striving to limit widespread infections.
Humanity & Health Foundation is therefore tasked with assisting some charity organizations and infrastructures on the ground with funds and resources to move from readiness to response as they fight the Public Health Emergency Pandemic
Basic preventative measures by individuals and communities remain the most powerful tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Your generous donations will go a long way in saving at least a life. Help us to prevent the unnecessary and untimely death of Africans.
