From Struggle to Strength: How Clean Water Transformed a Family in Ijebu-Ife
A Story of Resilience, Empowerment, and Community Transformation
Excerpt: “In the rural village of Ijebu-Ife, Nigeria, one mother’s life took a turn for the better when access to clean water and empowerment programs changed her family’s future. This is the inspiring journey of Adetoun Aderibigbe, (Though consent was given, the actual name is changed to protect the identity of the family).
A Struggle for Survival in Ijebu-Ife
For years, Adetoun Aderibigbe, a widow and trader from Ijebu-Ife, Ogun State, Nigeria, faced daily hardships. With three young children, ages 15, 9, and 3, she struggled to provide for her family on her limited earnings. The lack of clean water in her community only made matters worse, leading to frequent illnesses, missed school days for her children, and overwhelming medical expenses.
“I used to wake up before dawn just to fetch water from a distant stream. Often, the water was dirty, and my children would fall sick,” Adetoun recalls. “There were times when I had to choose between buying food or medicine. It was heartbreaking.”
A Community Transformed: The Humanity & Health Foundation’s Intervention
Recognizing the urgent need for change, the Humanity & Health Foundation stepped in with a Clean Water Initiative and Empowerment Program for Ijebu-Ife. Our efforts focused on:
✅ Installing a clean water filtration system, providing safe drinking water for over 200 families.
✅ Health and hygiene workshops, educating community members on disease prevention.
✅ Empowerment and skills development programs, offering women like Adetoun training in business and financial literacy.
✅ Support funds, helping widows and low-income families invest in small businesses.
From Crisis to Hope: A Mother’s Journey to Stability
With access to clean water, Adetoun’s family saw an immediate transformation. Her children stopped falling ill from waterborne diseases, allowing them to attend school consistently.
“Since we got clean water, my children haven’t missed school due to illness,” she says with relief. “Now, they can focus on their education, and I can focus on providing for them.”
Through the empowerment and skills development program, Adetoun received business training and a small support grant. With this, she expanded her trading business, increasing her income and improving her family’s standard of living.
“Before, I barely made enough to feed my children,” she explains. “Now, I can invest in my business, buy healthy food, and even save for emergencies.”
A Ripple Effect: Community Growth and Lasting Change
Adetoun’s story is just one among many in Ijebu-Ife. With clean water and economic empowerment, the community is witnessing:
✔️ Healthier families and fewer hospital visits.
✔️ More children attending school regularly.
✔️ Economic growth as women-led businesses flourish.
✔️ A stronger, self-sufficient community.
“Water is life,” Adetoun reflects. “Now, we have life, and we have hope.”
